Artist's Comments

Woo-hoo! These are a selection of several hundred exposures I made of the lunar eclipse on August 28, 2007. Not only was it fascinating watching the process occur, but I learned a great deal about my camera and astrophotography while I was at it. I used a Pentax 75-300mm zoom maxed out to shoot these, with an initial setting of f/16 for 1/180sec., and eventually worked my way down to f/5.8 for 4 seconds. I used an ISO of 200 (the lowest on my camera) for all of the shots. Although I think I could get sharper images with more practice, I'm actually pretty pleased with the results, all things considered. BTW, I did not touch up the color in any way--this is how the moon looked through my lens. It wasn't quite as red by the naked eye, but pretty close.

Wow, I never thought of creating eclipse mosaic in the form of a spiral. A different view on what most astronomers know very well, creative idea! :D

Thank you! I thought it was a nice change from the "slideshow" approach, too! :)

Thank you so much, I'm glad you liked this piece! I have to say, I was pretty exhausted by the time the eclipse was at its peak--I really needed to sleep! (which is why the mosaic ends with the peak, and not the end.). Don't feel to bad about having missed it, there will be another over North America in 2011, so you've got plenty of time to prepare!
